Procedures

Intrauterine insemination or IUI is a fertility treatment during which sperm is placed directly into the uterus.

Why Do You Need an IUI?

People with fertility issues need an IUI to help them with conception. It may also be used in conditions including:

  • Cervical mucous problems.

  • Low sperm count or sperm impairments.

  • Semen allergy.

  • Erectile dysfunction.

  • Unexplained fertility.

  • Ejaculation problems.

What Are the Steps of IUI Treatment?

A typical IUI treatment includes the following steps:

  • Ovulation

Your timing of ovulation is important as this is the time when sperm will be injected. Your doctor will determine the secretion of luteinizing hormone in your body. Once detected, sperm will be injected into your uterus within 24-36 hours.

  • Semen Sample Preparation

A fresh sample of semen will be collected from your partner on the day of the IUI procedure. This sample will be prepared with “sperm washing” and stored at the proper temperature until ready for injection.

  • Insemination

The insemination procedure is simple and takes only a few minutes. During the final procedure, a catheter will be inserted through your cervix into your uterus. Finally, your doctor will inject the washed sperm sample into the uterus.

You will be asked to lie down for 10-30 minutes after the procedure. Pregnancy happens if sperm fertilizes an egg and the fertilized egg implants in the lining of your uterus.

What Happens After IUI?

After the procedure, you will notice mild cramping and spotting for one or two days. You may return to your daily activities soon after the procedure. Your doctor will ask you to take a pregnancy test after 2 weeks of IUI.

What Are the Risks Associated with an IUI?

IUI is a low-risk procedure compared to other assisted reproductive treatments. It may, however, cause:

  • Twins.

  • Infection.

  • Spotting.

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Ovulation induction refers to a treatment wherein hormonal pills are used to induce ovulation in your body.

How is Ovulation Induction Done?

Ovulation induction is a simple process during which your doctor will prescribe certain oral medications or hormonal injections to simulate your ovulation procedure. Once your menstrual cycle starts, you can take medications and the doctor will keep monitoring your body with the help of an ultrasound.

Here are the steps involved:

  • Stimulation:

After taking the medications, the drugs will support the growth of follicles carrying eggs. Your doctor will keep track of this phase and your hormone levels during this phase.

  • Control:

After beginning the process, the doctors will also continuously monitor the effects of medications. These tests will also determine the hormonal levels along with the maturation status of the eggs.

  • Egg Release:

Once your follicles are ready, the doctor will inject HSG to make your ovaries ready for IVF or IUI.

What Are the Risks Associated with Ovarian Induction?

Ovarian induction is effective but it also poses certain risks including hot flushes, nausea, and pain in the pelvic region.

Follicular monitoring or follicular study is an integral part of IUI or IVF during which your doctor will monitor the growth of the follicle from the beginning of the menstrual cycle to the time it is ready to release an egg. This is done to ensure that quality eggs are being released from your ovaries and increase your chances of pregnancy.

In addition, follicular monitoring helps in determining the exact time of your cycle when you will ovulate. This makes it easy to either plan intercourse in that phase or inject semen to increase your chances of pregnancy.

What Happens During Follicular Monitoring?

Follicular monitoring includes a series of ultrasound tests of the vagina. A follicle begins to develop from the 9th day of your cycle. The scan starts from the time when your follicles have disappeared to when the ovulation starts.

Moreover, the doctor also checks the size of these follicles, the thickness of the endometrium, and blood flow to ensure successful pregnancy.

The entire procedure takes around 15-20 minutes.

Donor Intrauterine insemination or IUI is a fertility treatment during which a donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus.

Why Do You Need a Donor IUI?

People with fertility issues need an IUI to help them with conception. It may also be used in conditions including:

  • Cervical mucous problems.

  • Low sperm count or sperm impairments.

  • Semen allergy.

  • Erectile dysfunction.

  • Unexplained fertility.

  • Ejaculation problems.

What Are the Steps of Donor IUI Treatment?

A typical IUI treatment includes the following steps:

  • Ovulation

Your timing of ovulation is important as this is the time when sperm will be injected. Your doctor will determine the secretion of luteinizing hormone in your body. Once detected, sperm will be injected into your uterus within 24-36 hours.

  • Semen Sample Preparation

A fresh sample of semen will be collected from your donor on the day of the IUI procedure.
